为先决条件 | presuppose that; an argument that presupposes | The recommendation presupposes that the courts can move quickly. 该建议预设法院能迅速行动。 | 学术 | | entail | /ɪnˈteɪl/(≈伊恩泰尔·短) | v. | 蕴含,必然带来 | entail that; entail costs | A national rollout would entail costs the paper does not count. 全国推广会带来该文未计入的成本。 | 学术 | | tacit | /ˈtæsɪt/(≈泰西特·短) | adj. | 心照不宣的,默示的 | tacit agreement; a tacit assumption | The argument relies on a tacit assumption about turnout. 该论证依赖一个关于投票率的默示假设。 | 学术 | | stipulate | /ˈstɪpjuleɪt/ | v. | 明确规定,作为条件提出 | stipulate that; as stipulated | The model stipulates that prices adjust within a year. 该模型设定价格在一年内调整。 | 学术 | | hedge | /hedʒ/(≈黑知) | v./n. | 留退路;模糊限制 | hedge a claim; hedged language | The conclusion is hedged, which makes the criticism harder to land. 结论留了退路,批评因此更难落到实处。 | 学术 | | take for granted | — | phr. | 视为理所当然 | take it for granted that | The piece takes it for granted that growth will resume. 该文想当然地认为增长会恢复。 | 通用 | | burden of proof | — | phr. | 举证责任 | shift the burden of proof; bear the burden | The argument shifts the burden of proof onto its critics. 该论证把举证责任推给了批评者。 | 学术 | | charitable reading | — | phr. | 善意解读(最强的合理版本) | on a charitable reading; the most charitable reading | On a charitable reading, the claim is about the short run only. 作善意解读,该主张只涉及短期。 | 学术 | | unstated | /ʌnˈsteɪtɪd/(≈阿恩斯泰提德) | adj. | 未言明的 | an unstated premise; leave X unstated | One premise is left unstated, and it carries the argument. 有一个前提未被言明,而整个论证靠它支撑。 | 学术 | | foreclose | /fɔːˈkləʊz/(≈福克洛兹·长) | v. | 排除(可能性),使无法发生 | foreclose debate; foreclose alternatives | Framing the choice as binary forecloses the options worth discussing. ** "The shortfall" 预设确有一个缺口;"the failed policy" 预设它已失败。作者不必论证,读者已被带着走。 2. **事实动词预设从句为真。** realise、regret、overlook、manage to、be aware that——说某人 overlook 了某点,就已经预设那一点是真的、且他本该看到。 3. **重复副词预设先前状态。** again、too、still、stop、resume、return to——"output has resumed growth" 预设它曾增长过,且中间停过。 4. **分裂句预设其余部分为真。** "It was the ministry that ignored the warning" 预设有人忽视了警告,只争议是谁。这一条在新闻标题里极常见。 5. **定语位置的评价形容词预设评价成立。** "the reckless expansion" 与 "the expansion, which was reckless" 信息量相同,但前者把评价塞进指称,读者来不及质疑。 **否定测试:区分预设与断言** | 原句 | 否定后 | 判定 | | --- | --- | --- | | The shortfall is structural. | The shortfall is not structural. | 两句都预设"存在缺口"→ 存在缺口是预设 | | Output has resumed growth. | Output has not resumed growth. | 两句都预设"此前有增长"→ 是预设 | | The policy has failed. | The policy has not failed. | 否定后"失败"消失了→ 失败是断言,不是预设 | 判据只有一条:**否定整句后仍然成立的部分是预设,随之消失的部分是断言。** 预设是作者不必举证的地基,断言才是他必须负责的楼层。 **强弱对比** | 写法 | 效果 | 适用 | | --- | --- | --- | | The failed policy has cost 20,000 jobs. | 把"失败"塞进指称,读者无从反驳 | 社论;分析文里应避免 | | The policy, which critics call a failure, has cost 20,000 jobs. | 归属清楚,评价可争议 | 报道、分析 | | If the policy has failed—and the falling numbers suggest it has—the cost is 20,000 jobs. | 先给条件,再给依据,责任分明 | 立场分析、备忘录 | **常见误用** 1. **把反驳当预设。** 你补出的"作者认为任何政策三年必见效"若明显强于原文,那不是他的前提,是你的稻草人。判据:作者会不会承认?不会,就重写。 2. **把作者的修辞问句当断言。** "Can a state really pick winners?" ## 四、句型与范例 | 句式 | 功能 | 中文 | | --- | --- | --- | | The map treats X as given, but X is precisely what needs argument. | 指出该论证的地方没有论证 | 图把 X 当作已知,可 X 恰恰需要论证 | | The phrase "the failed policy" presupposes that it has failed. | 用触发语定位预设 | "失败的政策"这一说法预设了它已经失败 | | If we suspend that presupposition, the inference collapses. | 说明预设的承重作用 | 若悬置该预设,推论随即崩塌 | | This premise is never stated, but the argument cannot run without it. | 补前提的标准句式 | 该前提从未言明,但论证离了它无法运转 | | The negation test confirms it: denying the sentence leaves X intact. | 用测试给出证据 | 否定测试可证:否定该句后 X 依然成立 | | A more charitable reading would be that… | 给对方最强版本,避免稻草人 | 更善意的解读会是…… | | The argument shifts the burden of proof onto its critics. | 指出举证责任被转移 | 该论证把举证责任推给批评者 | | Two premises are doing unacknowledged work here: … and …. | 一次补两条,适合互评意见 | 有两条前提在此默默承重:……与…… | | Framing the choice this way forecloses the option of…. | 框架层面的批评 | 这样框定选择,排除了……这一选项 | **范文:一段 150 词的互评意见(可直接照着写)** > Your map is clear on the claim and the three pieces of evidence, but the premise you have written—"subsidies have not yet raised output"—is a restatement of evidence two, not a premise. A premise is what the argument needs and never says. Try this: the piece assumes that three years is long enough for a subsidy of this size to show results. Nothing in the text argues for that; the comparison with Taiwan implicitly relies on it. The negation test supports the reading: even if you deny that output has risen, the question of how long a policy needs remains untouched. If you suspend the premise, the step from "not yet" to "never" collapses, and with it the conclusion. One more thing: the phrase "the failed model" in your node three already carries the verdict—mark it as the author's framing, not as fact. 批注:开头两句先肯定再指出问题,互评的语域要求"对事具体、对人留面";第三句给出可操作的判据(前提是"需要且未说"),而不是抽象标准;第四、五句示范如何补前提并给依据;末句提醒对方注意指称里的评价——这是把今天的语言点用回互评。 ## 五、练习 **A 词汇与搭配(7 题)** 1. 选词(presuppose / stipulate):The model ______ that wages adjust within a year, an assumption the data do not support. 2. 搭配改错:take for granted the assumption that growth resumes. 3. 填空:The proposal would ______ costs the paper does not count.(entail) 4. 中译英:该论证把举证责任推给了批评者。 5. 词形:presuppose → 名词;unstated → 反义形容词(说出来的)。 6. 判断:charitable reading 是"仁慈的读法"还是"善意解读"? 7. 选词(foreclose / hedge):Framing the question as a binary ______ the options worth discussing. **B 句法(6 题)** 1. 找出预设:The government's misguided intervention has raised prices. 哪一个词携带评价?改成归属清楚的写法。 2. 否定测试:Output has returned to trend. 否定它,指出哪部分是预设。 3. 改写修辞问句为断言:Can a state really pick winners? 4. 补前提:从"两省试点成功"推到"全国推广可行",补一条必要前提。 5. 善意解读:把 "Regulators were asleep." 改写成最合理的版本(charitable reading)。 6. 说明承重:用 If we suspend that presupposition… 写一句,说明某前提缺席后的后果。 **C 输出(2 题)** 1. 互评记录 1 份:对方图的复述 1 段(80 词)+ 触发语清单 ≥8 条 + 补出的前提 1 条 + 两句依据 + 对方的回应 1 句。 2. 词卡复习表:30 张卡,列 = 词/搭配/我造的一句/错次;错 3 次以上的单独列成"顽固词"。 ## 六、参考答案 **A** 1. stipulate(模型明确设定)。presuppose 更偏"隐含以……为前提",此处模型明文设定,用 stipulate 更准。 2. take it for granted that growth will resume.(需要形式宾语 it + that 从句) 3. entail。 4. The argument shifts the burden of proof onto its critics. 5. presupposition;stated。 6. 善意解读(把对方读成最强的合理版本),与"仁慈"无关。 7. forecloses。 **B** 1. misguided 携带评价,且藏在定语里;改为 The government's intervention, which critics call misguided, has raised prices. 2. Output has not returned to trend. 两句都预设"曾经偏离趋势"——这是预设;"已回归"是断言。 3. A state cannot reliably pick winners.(再补一句依据,才是论证) 4. 示例:两省的条件在全国具有代表性,或试点期间没有发生足以改变结果的外部冲击。 5. Regulators lacked the information or the authority to act earlier.(给出可检验的弱化版本,而不是替换成另一个指控) 6. 示例:If we suspend that presupposition, the comparison with Taiwan no longer supports the claim about Europe, and the conclusion loses its only cross-case evidence.
