| 有分寸的,克制的 | a measured response; measured tones | The report's tone is measured, even where its findings are damning. | 貌似合理的 | a plausible reading; plausible but unproven | That is a plausible reading of the data, though not the only one. | 有说服力的 | a compelling case; compelling evidence | The case is compelling on cost, thinner on fairness. | 单薄的,不足的 | thin evidence; a thin argument | The evidence is thin: two cases, both chosen by the author. 正确 | vindicate a claim; be vindicated by events | Later data vindicated the sceptics, not the forecasters. | 过度延伸;越界 | a case of overreach; the argument overreaches | The conclusion overreaches the evidence by a wide margin. | 限定,修正(论断) | qualify a claim; a qualified yes | The author qualifies the claim twice, then drops the qualifiers in the conclusion. | 站得住脚的 | a defensible conclusion; defensible on the evidence | A narrower conclusion would be more defensible. | 有倾向性的,带偏见的 | a tendentious reading; tendentious use of data | The selection of cases is tendentious rather than merely unlucky. | 尽管;然而 | notwithstanding the evidence; the caveats notwithstanding | Notwithstanding the caveats, the central finding holds. 搭配上注意:overreach 作名词常与 a case of 连用,作动词直接跟宾语(the argument overreaches);notwithstanding 可以前置也可以后置,前置时后面不加 that,写成 Notwithstanding the evidence, … 而不是 Notwithstanding that the evidence… It may well be that…/One reading is that…;评估用 The evidence suggests that…/The argument is stronger on X than on Y;断定用 The argument fails because…。 ** My reading of the figures is that…/I am not persuaded that… I think、I feel、in my opinion ** For all its care with the data, the piece never asks who bears the cost.——先承认对方的强处,再指出缺口,比一路否定更可信,也更难被反驳。 **力度对照** | 档位 | 句式 | 适用证据 | 风险 | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 试探 | It may well be that the effect is smaller than claimed. | 单一案例、无对照 | 用多了显得没判断 | | 评估 | The evidence suggests the effect is overstated. | 多案例、有比较 | 最稳,也最常用 | | 断定 | The argument fails at the point where it infers cause from sequence. | The author's conclusion outruns the evidence at one point. | The evidence cannot bear the weight the conclusion places on it. | 前者全盘否定,后者说明"承重不够",更准确也更难反驳 | | This is a terrible argument. | The argument is persuasive on costs and silent on distribution. ** "The weakest part is the conclusion." ** "The author's claim that subsidies fail is overstated" 乍看没问题,但若前一句刚写了自己的看法,读者会分不清这句是转述还是评价。 That claim is overstated、This is where the argument overreaches。 ## 四、句型与范例 | 句式 | 功能 | 中文 | | --- | --- | --- | | The article argues that…, and its claim is narrower than the headline. | 交代主张并校准范围 | 该文主张……,其主张比标题窄 | | The strongest evidence is…, and it is well chosen because… | | The weakest link is the step from… to… 那一步 | | That inference would hold only if… 时才成立 | | The author measures only X, which will miss… | | My reading of the figures is that… | | I am not persuaded that… 能够成立 | | A more defensible conclusion would be that… | | For all its care with X, the piece never asks… | **范文:200 词(四部分齐全,引用 2 处)** > The op-ed argues that cities should stop subsidising sports stadiums, on the ground that the promised returns never arrive. Its claim is narrower than the headline: it does not say stadiums are worthless, only that public money does better elsewhere. The strongest evidence is a comparison of eleven cities that built arenas between 2000 and 2015; in nine, employment in the surrounding district grew more slowly than the city average. That comparison is well chosen because it holds the national cycle roughly constant and looks where the benefit should be largest. The weakest link is the step from "no measurable gain" to "no gain at all". The author counts only jobs within three kilometres, which will miss effects that are diffuse, slow, or felt as amenity rather than payroll. My reading of the figures is that they justify refusing a subsidy; they do not justify the confident claim that nothing is gained. A more defensible conclusion would be that cities should take a share of the upside rather than underwrite the downside. 首句 argues + on the ground that,一句给出主张与理由,不写背景,250 词没有铺陈的余量。 2. 5. 末两句完成署名判断与替代结论,I 只出现一次且带 my reading of the figures,责任清楚。 2. 选词(thin / tendentious):The evidence is ______: two cases, both chosen to prove the point. 3. The conclusion overreaches from the evidence. 4. 6. 填空:Later data ______ the sceptics.(vindicate) 7. The argument is very very bad. The evidence proves the policy failed. 2. The conclusion is too broad. I think the sample is too small. 4. 让步:用 For all its… 5. 合并:两句并一句,保留因果——The author counts only jobs. Benefits may appear as amenities.(用 which 从句) 6. The policy should be scrapped. 2. thin(材料不够)。 3. The conclusion overreaches: it claims more than the evidence supports.(overreach 作动词直接跟,或改写为 the conclusion is an overreach) 4. Notwithstanding the caveats, the central finding holds. 5. defensibility;qualification / qualifier。 6. vindicated。 7. The argument does not survive contact with the evidence. / The argument is weak at the point where it generalises. **B** 1. The evidence suggests the policy failed. / On this evidence, the policy appears to have failed. 2. The weakest link is the step from two successful pilots to a claim about national rollout. 3. My reading of the sample is that 40 firms cannot support a sector-wide claim. 4. For all its care with the fiscal numbers, the piece never asks who bears the cost of adjustment. 5. The author counts only jobs, which will miss benefits that appear as amenities rather than payroll. 6. The policy should be redesigned so that cities capture part of the upside. / A more defensible conclusion is that the subsidy should be conditional, not abolished.
