The dispute is not over X but over Y",Y 必须是一个前提而非结论 | 对照表 1 张 + 分歧句 1 句 | **时间不够时的降级版**:三篇各只读首段、末段和带有数据的段落(约 40 分钟),仍要凑齐 6 条证据与 3 条假设,第 4 环节压缩到 8 分钟。 | 预设;未经言明即被当作前提的内容 | a central / tacit presupposition; rest on a presupposition | 学术 | | implicit | ɪmˈplɪsɪt | adj. | 隐含的,未明说的 | implicit in; an implicit claim / assumption | 学术 | | contention | kənˈtenʃn | n. | 论点,主张(可争论的那种) | support / reject / advance a contention | 学术、媒体 | | empirical | ɪmˈpɪrɪkl | adj. | 实证的,基于观察与数据的 | empirical evidence / support; empirically thin | 学术 | | bear out | beə aʊt | phrasal v. | 证实(预测、说法) | the data bear out; borne out by later research | 学术、媒体 | | underpin | ˌʌndəˈpɪn | v. | 支撑(论证、体系) | underpin the case for; be underpinned by | 学术 | | take issue with | teɪk ˈɪʃuː wɪð | phr. 提出异议(比 disagree 正式) | take issue with the claim / reading | 媒体 | | unsubstantiated | ˌʌnsəbˈstænʃieɪtɪd | adj. | 未经证实的 | an unsubstantiated claim / figure | 媒体、学术 | | premise | ˈpremɪs | n. | 前提 | on the premise that; a false premise | 学术 | | countervailing | ˌkaʊntəˈveɪlɪŋ | adj. **presupposition** — The report's central presupposition is that demand will recover by 2027. 2. **implicit** — The headline carries an implicit claim that the ban has already failed. 3. **contention** — Her contention that regulation stifles innovation rests on two sector-level studies. 4. **empirical** — The case is normatively attractive but empirically thin. 5. **bear out** — Later data have borne out the forecast, though not its timing. 6. **underpin** — Two unstated assumptions underpin the case for deregulation. 7. **take issue with** — The FT takes issue with the Economist's reading of the jobs data. (take issue with 后面接"观点",不接"人";接人应说 take issue with the author over...) 8. **unsubstantiated** — The piece repeats an unsubstantiated figure of 200,000 job losses. 9. **premise** — Strip away that premise and the recommendation loses its force. 10. **countervailing** — Any efficiency gain is offset by countervailing training costs. the failure of industrial policy、the shift to remote work、the cost-of-living crisis——每一个都内含一条断言。 Regulation has raised compliance costs the fact that、X's decision to、it is widely accepted that、it has become clear that——后面接的内容被当作已知处理。 more effective、a growing number of、increasingly will > is bound to > is likely to > may well > could conceivably,承诺度依次递减。 The failure of the current system...,然后再去证明它失败——那是循环。 | 结论被塞进评价形容词,无主体、无指标 | Compliance costs have risen 30% for firms with fewer than 50 staff since 2021. | 定冠词直接判定失败,读者被迫先同意 | Price controls, which have missed their inflation targets for three years, ... | 把判断改成可查的事实,判断权交还读者 | | It is widely accepted that remote work erodes mentoring. | "widely accepted" 无出处,用共识压人 | Three of the four studies reviewed find weaker mentoring under hybrid arrangements. Critics who deny that automation destroys jobs...,等于先承认了"自动化摧毁就业"。 Critics who question whether automation destroys jobs on balance... 2. a more efficient system the deterioration in the quality of public service delivery 1. **The article's central contention is that ..., a claim that rests on ...** 文章的核心论点是……,这一主张建立在…… 2. **What the argument leaves unstated is the assumption that ...** 这套论证没有说出来的,是这样一个假设:……(What 从句作主语,避免 It is...that 的空转。) 3. **The evidence adduced — ... — is consistent with X but does not establish it.** 所举的证据与 X 相符,但并不能证明 X。 4. **This presupposes that ..., an assumption the piece never defends.** 这预设了……,而全文从未为这一假设辩护。 5. **Where the three diverge is not over X but over Y.** 三篇的分歧不在 X,而在 Y。(用 Where 引导主语从句,比 The difference is... 6. **Even granting that ..., the conclusion does not follow.** 即便承认……,结论也推不出来。 7. **Once that premise is removed, the recommendation loses much of its force.** 一旦抽掉这个前提,建议就大为失力。 8. **The Economist stakes its case on ..., whereas the FT works from ...** 《经济学人》把论点押在…… 9. **Read together, the three suggest that the dispute is empirical rather than normative.** 合起来读,三篇表明这场争论是实证的,而非规范的。 10. **Notably absent from the account is any figure for ...** 全文明显缺的是关于…… **示范句组**(把三篇读完后可以直接套用的一段,约 90 词): > Read together, the three pieces agree on the diagnosis and disagree on the remedy. The Economist stakes its case on speed: permitting reform, it argues, is the binding constraint. The FT accepts the diagnosis but takes issue with the arithmetic, noting that permitting accounts for a fraction of the delay. Foreign Affairs goes further, questioning the premise both share — that additional supply, rather than a reallocation of existing capacity, is what the sector lacks. The proposal rests on the ______ that households will keep spending through a recession. 2. 改错:The study takes issue with the author.(说明为什么错,给出两种改法) 3. The 2019 forecast ______ by subsequent data, although the timing was off. 4. 选出语域更正式的一项并说明理由:(a) The evidence doesn't really prove much. (b) The evidence is consistent with the claim but does not establish it. 5. The argument is based on two implicit assumptions which underpin it.(句中有一处语义重复,指出并改写) 6. 7. 把 unsubstantiated 改成动词短语,保持语域不变:an unsubstantiated claim → a claim that ______. *The collapse of the 2021 pilot scheme shows that public procurement cannot move at speed.* 2. Regulation has increased the cost of compliance. 3. This approach is more effective. 4. 降级:The policy has failed. (a) All three accept that supply is short. (b) They differ on why. (c) The difference is about the cause, not the fact. 必须出现至少 3 个今日词汇、1 处 consistent with...but does not establish、1 处 Where the three diverge。 2. 错在 take issue with 接观点不接人。改法一:take issue with the author's conclusion;改法二:take issue with the author over her reading of the data。 3. was borne out(被动,borne 不是 bore 或 born;born 只用于"出生"。) 4. (b)。(a) 用 doesn't really 与 prove much,是口语评价,且 prove 在学术语境里过强;(b) 用 consistent with 与 establish 做梯度,既保留怀疑又不失礼。 The argument rests on two implicit assumptions. 或 Two implicit assumptions underpin the argument. 6. 示例:The efficiency gains from automation are partly offset by countervailing costs in retraining. 7. a claim that has not been substantiated / for which no evidence has been offered。 两条都在名词短语 the collapse of the 2021 pilot scheme 里,读者若质疑"崩溃"的判定标准,整句就悬空。 2. 示例:Ministers have raised the cost of compliance through successive licensing rules. 3. 示例:This approach is more effective than case-by-case review at reducing processing times, on the department's own 2024 figures. 4. 示例:The policy's results are consistent with failure but do not yet establish it. 或 The available evidence points towards, rather than demonstrates, failure. 5. 示例:Where the three diverge is not over whether supply is short but over why. 第 2 题参考段落(约 150 词): > Where the three diverge is not over the shortage itself but over its cause. The Economist treats the constraint as physical and therefore temporary; the FT treats it as a financing problem, which policy can ease; Foreign Affairs treats it as a question of allocation, which neither more money nor faster permits will settle. Each position carries an implicit presupposition. The first assumes that demand is stable, the second that capital is the binding constraint, the third that existing capacity is underused. Only the third premise, if borne out, would damage the other two conclusions at once. The evidence adduced so far is consistent with all three but does not establish any of them, which is why the disagreement has survived three years of data.
